Gynecology Q&A

What is gynecology?

Gynecology is a medical specialty that focuses on diseases and functions specific to women, especially those affecting the reproductive system. Gynecology services and needs change throughout the stages of a woman’s life. Routine gynecology care helps your provider rule out or detect specific women’s health concerns before complications arise.

Which gynecology services are available?

The team at Buffalo Women Services offers a wide array of gynecology services for women of all ages, including:

  • Birth control
  • Annual gynecology exams
  • Pap smears
  • Hormone replacement therapy
  • Hormones for patients who are transitioning
  • Mammograms and ultrasound referrals
  • Menopause treatment
  • Reproductive cancer screening
  • STD testing
  • LGBTQ care
  • Lesbian gynecology
  • Abortion
  • Low intervention birth
  • Water birth

What should I expect during a gynecologic health exam?

During a gynecologic health exam at Buffalo Women Services, you’re greeted by friendly staff. They check your weight, blood pressure, and other vital signs and review your medical history, including any symptoms you have.

Dr. Morrison completes a comprehensive gynecologic health exam, pelvic exam, and possibly a Pap smear and culture swab.

When should I see a gynecologist?

You should schedule regular gynecology exams starting at the age of 21 or when you become sexually active, whichever comes first. Routine gynecology annual exams continue into older adulthood and beyond. Your OB/GYN specialist lets you know if it’s time for a Pap smear.

You may require more than one appointment annually if you have an abnormal Pap smear, vaginal pain, or changes in your period.

In addition to your regular gynecology visit, schedule an appointment at Buffalo Women Services if you have gynecologic health-related questions or experience any of the following symptoms:

  • Bleeding with sexual intercourse
  • Bleeding between periods
  • Irregular or absent menstrual periods
  • Abnormally heavier painful periods
  • Increased urination, urgency, or burning sensations
  • Pelvic pain
  • Vaginal discharge with an unpleasant odor
  • Itching, burning, or pain in your vaginal area
  • Visible sores or lumps in your genital area

Don’t neglect your gynecological health and let a highly treatable problem turn into a serious medical issue. Schedule your next gynecologic health exam with Buffalo Women Services over the phone or online today.
